EV charger installation in Perth

Home and workplace charging installed by a licensed electrical contractor, with the load assessment done before the charger is chosen rather than after it arrives.

What we do

  • Home AC chargers, 7kW single phase and 22kW three phase
  • Load assessment and switchboard capacity checks
  • Dedicated circuit and RCD protection to EV requirements
  • OCPP and smart chargers with app scheduling
  • Solar aware charging and excess solar diversion
  • Workplace and fleet charging with multiple bays
  • Load management across several chargers
  • Strata and shared parking installations
  • Commissioning, testing and handover

How it works

The charger is the easy part. The question that decides the job is whether your switchboard and supply can carry the extra load, and that needs checking before anything is ordered.

A 7kW single phase charger draws around 32 amps continuously. On an older Perth home with a modest main switch and an existing air conditioner, that can be more than the supply will comfortably take. The answer is sometimes a supply upgrade, but more often it is load management, where the charger backs off when the rest of the house is drawing hard. That is usually far cheaper, and we will tell you which applies before you commit.

If you have three phase available, a 22kW charger roughly triples the charge rate, though most cars cap their onboard AC charging well below that. We will match the charger to what your vehicle can actually accept rather than selling you headroom you cannot use.

For solar owners, a charger that can divert excess generation rather than importing from the grid changes the running cost materially. These need the right CT metering at the switchboard, which we install as part of the job.

Workplace and fleet installations add load management across multiple bays, driver authentication and usage reporting. OCPP compliant hardware keeps you free to change back end providers later rather than being locked to one vendor.

We commission every charger, run a full charge cycle, and set up the app before we leave.

Compliance and safety

EV charging circuits are installed to AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 3012 where applicable, with the RCD protection type required for EV supply equipment. Installations may need notification to Western Power, and any supply upgrade must be arranged through them. We handle that process as part of the job.

Questions about ev chargers

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

The charger itself and the installation are separate costs, and the installation varies with the distance from your switchboard to the parking space, whether the cable run is accessible, and whether your switchboard has spare capacity. A straightforward installation close to the board is considerably cheaper than one running the length of a house. We quote after assessing the site rather than giving a figure that changes later.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard or power supply?

Often not. A 7kW charger draws around 32 amps, which many Perth homes can handle, but it depends on your existing load. Where capacity is tight, load management is usually the answer: the charger reduces its draw when the rest of the house is working hard. That is much cheaper than a supply upgrade. We assess this before recommending anything.

Should I get a single phase or three phase charger?

Only if you have three phase supply, and only if your car can use it. Most electric vehicles cap onboard AC charging at 7kW to 11kW, so a 22kW three phase charger will not charge them any faster. We check what your vehicle accepts before recommending a charger.

Can the charger use my solar power?

Yes, with the right hardware. Solar aware chargers monitor your export and divert excess generation into the car rather than sending it to the grid. This needs current transformer metering installed at your switchboard, which we fit as part of the installation.

What is OCPP and does it matter?

OCPP is an open protocol that lets a charger talk to different management platforms. It matters most for workplace and fleet installations, because it means you can change back end providers later without replacing hardware. For a single home charger it matters less, but it is still worth having.

Do I need approval from Western Power?

EV charger installations may need to be notified to Western Power, and any increase to your supply capacity definitely goes through them. We handle that notification as part of the job so you are not chasing it.
